November / December 2009 - GM launches new '3 for 2' offers
Following the overwhelming success of our recent 'Clearance Sale' category, and after receiving huge feedback from members wanting to just recycle their books and offer discounts to all their books, we’re pleased to announce the launch of our new '3 for 2' offer!
Sellers wishing to discount their books, to increase their sales or to simply help recycle more books (and make some space for all the Christmas books they're expecting) may want to consider offering a discount to raise their profile and help attract more buyers!
Just logon to your MyAccount homepage and select the new ‘Offers & Discounts’ option, once selected, the ‘3 for 2’ logo will appear next to all of your books for sale.
Our '3 for 2' discount - means a buyer can select 3 books from your 'Books for Sale' list, and receive the cheapest item free. The seller therefore receives payment for the 2 most expensive books - no deductions are made by GM for the third book.
Buyers benefit by receiving a free book, while our sellers benefit by selling and recycling more of their books.
For example
If buyer selects 3 books from a '3 for 2' seller:
Hardback book priced at £3.75 plus £2.00 postage
Paperback book priced at £2.75
Paperback book priced at £3.75
Total cost £12.25
Less '3 for 2' discount £2.75
Buyer pays £9.50
With our '3 for 2' the buyer receives the cheapest book free (in this case the £2.75 one) and only pays £9.50. The seller receives their £8.00 for the 2 most expensive books sold.
November 2009 - GM Launches new ‘Contact Member’ facility
As part of our continued website enhancements and our move towards a more community based website, which included the introduction of our Star ratings, Seller Feedback and Forum, we’re pleased to announce our latest addition – our new ‘Contact Member’ facility.
Members can already contact a seller if they wish to ask a question about a book listed for sale, in case they need to check details before deciding to buy. However from today, members will also be able to contact the buyer or seller of an order that has been made.
If you’re the seller and are unable to dispatch on time, or perhaps you’ve only just noticed the book isn’t quite in the condition that you thought it was, now you can contact the buyer and let them know.
Or if you’re the buyer, and perhaps need to change the delivery address after you’ve placed the order, now you can contact the seller directly.
Whether you’re the buyer or seller, now you can contact the member of your order by simply going to your View Orders page, and use the ‘Contact’ button next to the Buyer or Seller. All e-mails are sent via GreenMetropolis, so no member can see your actual e-mail address and a copy of all e-mails sent are kept on file by GreenMetropolis.
All members now have a ‘Member Inbox’ where they can view e-mails sent and received, copies are also sent to members registered e-mail address.

You now have the option of discounting books by 50p, £1.00, £1.50 or £2.00. So members who simply wish to recycle their books instead of making a profit can now do so, and members who wish to move their books on quickly by offering them for less can also join in, and remember, we STILL donate 5p for every book sold to the Woodland Trust, the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity to help support Woodland Creation.
June 2009 - GreenMetropolis.com is proud to be supporting the Memory4Teachers project
Memory 4 Teachers is a major new ICT initiative taking place within the UK education sector. The project has been developed, in association with LEAs and Teacher Unions, to support teachers and educators in addressing their ever-increasing workloads by funding the provision of 750,000 USB memory sticks, so that every school teacher and teaching assistant in the UK will receive a free memory stick, pre-installed with free teaching resources and websites providing support for teachers and educators.
GreenMetropolis.com welcomes the opportunity to work with teachers and pupils to help raise awareness of the environment and highlight the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling. We are a company dedicated to encouraging its members to recycle their books for the benefit of the environment, while at the same time encouraging greater literacy by bringing down the cost of books and making reading more affordable and accessible to adults and children alike.
November 2008 - GreenMetropolis Launches new online Book Forum
GreenMetropolis.com has just launched a Book Forum, where members can talk about their favourite books, authors and much much more!
The new Forum will enable the personal touch, often lacking from on-line stores, where members can meet other members, ask for title recommendations, post questions about books and authors, or simply share their green ideas across the community whilst you chat!
August 2008 - We've made our first Million!
We’ve something exciting to celebrate, after only four years since launching our website, we now have over 1,000,000 books to choose from which is a great landmark for us and our members! From tiny acorns mighty oaks do grow!
While much has changed since the early days of the website, our recycling principles have not –
• ALL books remain priced at just £3.75 to buy (including free delivery on all standard sized paperbacks)
• Sell your books and receive at least £3.00 for every book sold (that’s 80% cash-back)
• For every book sold, we donate 5p to the Woodland Trust, the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity to help support Woodland Creation
And now we can help the Woodland Trust reach their goal of a huge woodland creation site in England. They have until the end of September to purchase a vast 850 acre woodland creation site. This is the Trust's most exciting and ambitious tree planting opportunity in England, creating a new forest for wildlife and people to enjoy for free, forever.
May 2008 - GreenMetropolis Launches Seller Ratings
Following feedback from both our buyers and sellers, we’ve made a number of changes to the way our books are listed and displayed for sale, which we hope you’ll all appreciate.
One of the biggest changes is the introduction of our new ‘Seller Ratings’. Buyers can now rate each purchase once a book has been received to reflect the accuracy of a seller’s condition rating, the promptness of dispatch and the level of packaging. This feedback is then used to produce a ‘Seller Rating’ for each seller, which is then displayed next to every book listed for sale, giving more choice to buyers when deciding which book to buy. These ratings are displayed next to the ‘Seller ID’, however we encourage all members to logon to their MyAccount homepage and set their ‘Display Name’ which will then be displayed next to their books listed for sale instead. The buyer will also have the option to leave feedback to the Seller
We hope these changes will not only give more choice to buyers, by enabling them to select between Price, Condition and Seller Rating, but will give more control to sellers, as we also increase the number of books which are eligible for postage payments, giving sellers more choice on whether they wish to add postage or discount their books, while still encouraging them to remain competitive and compete against other sellers.
Donate to the Woodland Trust...
GreenMetropolis.com is delighted to announce our new facility for members to donate some of their proceeds from book sales to the Woodland Trust.
In addition to our 5p donation to the Trust for every book recycled, members now also have the option of making a donation from their GreenMetropolis.com account. This scheme is an excellent way to help the Trust generate extra income from the books that you no longer want or need. Members can donate part or all of their proceeds from their book sales to the Woodland Trust, enabling the Trust to further help protect existing woodland, create new woodland and bring about improved biodiversity.
With our members help we donated to the Woodland Trust £1,974 during 2005, £4,090 during 2006, £5,549 during 2007 and £5,881 for 2008.

"Share a good read! Why waste trees by buying shiny new books when you can buy and sell them second-hand via an inspired new website, www.GreenMetropolis.com. Fifty unwanted paperbacks stacked up at home could sell through the site for a total of £150, all of which goes to the vendor. Plus, 5p from every book sale goes to the Woodland Trust."
Internet Advisor Magazine
"It takes one tree to make around 300 books. However, by buying your books second-hand from new GreenMetropolis website, you can be assured that 5p will be donated from every purchase to the Woodland Trust, for planting new trees. And of course, buying them second-hand means cutting down fewer trees in the first place, as well." Internet Advisor rating = 5 stars
Evening Standard (Homes and Property)
"Ged rid of clutter and do your bit for the environment via a second-hand book website, GreenMetropolis.com. You register all your old unwanted books with them, get £3 for each one you sell (all books are sold for £3.75) and every time you make a sale, a 5p donation goes to The Woodland Trust's Plant a Tree scheme."
Daily Mirror
"You can now buy books (for less), earn cash and help protect the environment, all on one website. www.greenmetropolis.com is a comprehensive online secondhand bookstore, where all paperbacks cost £3.75 (inc delivery) whether they're the latest release or last year's blockbuster. In addition, 5p of each sale is donated to the conservation charity Woodland Trust. Simply log on, search for the book you want, register and buy it. The site operates a buy and sell account, which means you can sell your already-read books via the site."
