I have just started this and am very impressed. Anyone else reading it? Don't want to know the ending, please! It's 606 pages so will take me quite a while. I like the sound of the books you're selling, wastenotwantnot. Will purchase when I can.

Hi there. I finished reading this recently. I enjoyed it, but felt it could have been 150 pages shorter and just as good! I was more inerested in the contemporary story line rather than Eliza's story myself. Very interesting to learn about Latter Day Saints and their beliefs, but also the ways these beliefs were manipulated to justify having multiple wives. I'll be interested to hear what you think when you've finished this, so leave a post when you do.

Thanks Frogella. I finished the 19th wife over Easter and entirely agree with everything you say. Towards the end I skipped to the modern story because it was like a detective story and I wanted to know the outcome. I read the other pages later. I wonder what happened to her other son James. I also looked on a few websites about modern mormons and plural marriage. Hope I'm not treading on any toes but I do wonder how a chap telling people he had a couple of visions whilst alone could start a massive belief like that.I'm a Richard Dawkins fan myself.

I'm part way through it. I enjoy it when reading it but leave it too long in between (I have a 5 month old!) and forget were I am. Have read a couple of books about the mormons and find it very interesting.

Haha!
I hope GM do give us a separate space for book chat. Then we can look to see if anyone's started a thread about a book, and others can carry it on perhaps weeks later. as we've no 'search' they get lost otherwise.
Just about to start "The Secret Scripture" which was recommended by someone on GM...
Enjoy these months, Caromel, especially this Summer. My "grandchildren" are 20 months old now, and such fun!

Have just bought The 19th Wife through GM and it is now in the to-do pile along with about 12 others. There seems to be an influx of books catching my eye and I just keep on buying.Very hard to ignore when lots of the large stores have such good offers on . Hopefully they will eventually reach my GM listings.

Finished reading this a couple of months ago. i also felt it was too long, but i actually much preferred the historical story to the modern one. there seemed to be much more time devoted the the historical narrative, and in contrast the modern story felt too shallow and rushed. overall, i did enjoy this book and would recommend it.
