I've just finished this book and was pleasently surprised.

Has anyone else read it?

The parrallels that can be drawn between Gideon's life/testament, and the nature of religious conviction keep you thinking after you've finished the book. Like philosophy it more questions than it answers, but is definitely worth a read.

had a chat with some other members about this fabulous book on one of the other threads. I enjoyed it so much I read it far too quickly - it deserves a slower reread.

I've found the other threads and your posts now, but this is the newest thread on the book, so i'll carry on with this one...!

Once i'd finished it, I went back and re-read some of it again...it kind of niggles at you as you think you know which account of events to believe then the end gets you doubting...

I found that it really picks up pace about halfway through. It's worth the slow start, as I think the author tried to lay a lot of ground work for the characters so that the second half can be interpreted in different ways.

(I hope that made sense - I don't want to give any of the plot away!)

Life's too short to reread a slogger 24799! I did just love this book but I could easily see why it wouldn't be to everyone's taste. My husband once calculated that at his average rate of reading he only had time for about a 1000 books before he dies. I read faster but am older but even 2000 books isn't enough to go back and try to find out what other people thought was all the fuss was about! Try a sure winner like Water for Elephants - wonderful characters, story and a big old twist to get your brain going!

I read this and then found out about a similar book called 'Confessions of a Justified Sinner' by Samuela Hogg (I think!) which was a really good accompaniment and really entertaining - a similar sort of thing where the 'author' finds an old text - which is highly recommended.
