I've just finished reading The Secret Scripture and really enjoyed it. I dont know a huge amount about The Troubles in N Ireland before but what a horrific time to live through. I'd really recommend this, not the usual sort of book I'd go for, but I'm so glad I did!

Ooh, have literally just read the first few pages of The Secret Scripture last night and wondered if anyone else had read it. The reviews sound fab but the first couple of pages didn't immediately grab me. Will look forward to getting stuck in to it though.

Stick with it, I think his style of writing takes time to get used to. I think it gets more interesting once you learn more about Roseanne's childhood. I wont say any more as I dont want to give anything away! I'm so glad someone else has read it, nobody I've spoken to has even heard of it, but I think its int the top ten paperback best sellers at the moment.
I enjoyed The Waterhorse just as much, possibly more, than East of the Sun. There is a lot to get stuck into in the storyline, The Crimean War and women's role as nurses (the first time they were allowed to go to war which was against popular opinion at the time) plus a love story.
There are so many good books around at the moment, I feel spoilt for choice!!

Thanks for the advice, Frogella. Will stick with The Secret Scripture, I have read a couple of really good reviews of it so added it to my GM wishlist until it came in stock.
Also, thanks for the info about The Waterhorse, will purchase your copy now :) Both my Mum and I will enjoy it.

Great to hear other thoughts on this book. I too found it really hard at first but by about a third of the way in I couldn't put it down.Loved to writing and the two person perspective, a devise that can sometimes be too trite and a bit irritating; but not in this case. Best ending for a book for a while!
Will definately read the Waterhorse now.

Hi Sarah,
Still only 4 chapters in (we were at a wedding for the weekend) and it's picking up interest but your comments definitely encourage me to get a spurt on.
Noticed you are reading When will there be good news?, what do you think of it? I really enjoyed it but I did really enjoy the two other books featuring Jackson Brodie.

When will ther be Good News is on my TBR but I've not read the other two, only the brilliant Behind The Scenes so I'm looking forward to that too.

Will try not to give any spoilers on The Secret Scripture.

Liz, would definitely recommend reading Case Histories and One Good Turn before When will there be good news?. Mind you, if your tbr pile is brimming over I'm sure it works well on it's own. Long time since I read Behind the Scenes at the Museum but loved it too.

Notice you are reading the Thirteenth Tale (I'm obviously very nosy looking at what everyone is reading), Liz and that's another book I loved.

Ooooh, I've finished the Thirteenth Tale (keep forgetting to edit it!) but was disappointed - maybe hyped up a bit too much? It took me ages to read as it didn't really hold me, don't really know why, thought that as it involved twins it would. I've got lots on my TBR and am NOT supposed to be buying more, so will try "Secret" on its own and let you know what I think.

Is the Twins Handbook a good one? I might put my friend onto it, she's got 19-month old girls and is training to be a breast feeding counsellor.

Re:The Secret Scripture posted by StephJ

Liz, sorry to hear you were disappointed with the The Thirteenth Tale. I'm also a bit biased to books with twins in though :). To be honest, I didn't refer much to the Twins Handbook in the end but it was a recommended book on twins that I bought when I was pregnant with my twins. My favourite book when pregnant was called Double Trouble by Emma Mahoney as it was a more lighthearted book. Twins Handbook may be useful though if your friend is training to be a breastfeeding counsellor. Hope she is enjoying her twin girls, I have 3 year old girl/boy twins plus an older girl (6 on Sat) and found the toddler stage quite hardgoing. They are really growing up now though and lots of fun.

Sunshine Girl, still not progressed that much with The Secret Scripture but would probably recommend it for holiday reading. Although don't think it is particularly light hearted and bearing in mind I read A thousand splendid suns on my summer holiday, I may not be the best person to recommend holiday reading. Hope that helps though.

Well, I'm desperate to read "A thousand..."etc so let's see!
My friend is loving her identical girls' twins babyhood (we all know what hard work it is!!!) and my sister's 13 year old non-identical girls are great! Will tell her about the book... but today, my day to help out with them, has been chaotic as all they did was cry for their mum, whether she was away or in the next room trying to eat her dinner. LOL!

Sunshine Girl, I like to take a mix of 'easy' and 'meaty' books away; often it's a good time to read the books that are hard work if you're working and brain dead!
