I've not long finished reading this and really enjoyed it. One of the back-cover blurb nods at both Marina Lewycka (Ukranian Tractors) and Captain Corelli, and it has both the sweep, the love story and the contemporary family disputes. It is set in Poland and flips (happily not annoyingly) between the Second World War and the present day, with the two stories gradually converging. There appear to be only a couple of copies on GM, so either everyone else is holding onto theirs or haven't come across the book in the first place.
