One of the back-cover blurb nods at both Marina Lewycka (Ukranian Tractors) and Captain Corelli, and it has both the sweep, the love story and the contemporary family disputes. It is set in Poland and flips (happily not annoyingly) between the Second World War and the present day, with the two stories gradually converging.
