Hi. I always favoured zombies over vampires by a mile... even though they're usually really badly written! But since reading the '30 Days of Night' trilogy of novels, I'm not sure... . What do you think?

I'm more of a vampire lover myself, zombies are too crude and gory. However, the vampires in 'I am Legend' are zombies with a taste for blood. Best of both worlds do you think??

Vikki1-I've just bought some books published by Abaddon, which is a small publisher that specialises in apocalyptic horror and zombies. All well written.

I really enjoyed Cell but not sure if I remember the storyline for sleepwalkers (will have to dig it out for a re-read). Thanks VikiB will have a look for them. Is it online?

Hi. Yes, if you go to Amazon and do a book search for 'Abaddon' it will bring them up. It will also bring other books up with the word Abaddon in the title too, which you'll have to ignore. I bought a bunch of them from Ebay, a surprising bargain as books often sell for more than they're worth on that site!

I'm not really interested in sexy - I've got a hunky husband. Lucky me!
Seriously though, I agree that a lot of zombie books are badly written, but there are some good ones. I think it's my earler interest in post-apocalyptic fiction that got me started on zombies. And it isn't the 'sexiness' of vampires that attracts me either. Maybe it's an age thing... I'm just too old (I'm 32!).

Oooh difficult choice but I think its got to be vampires, they have more variety! Huge fan of Buffy - the TV series and novels, loved the True Blood tv series and can't wait to start reading the books and I also loved Twilight.Huge fan of Dracula and I am Legend as well.

Anyone got any other recommendations for me? I prefer books set in more modern settings. I'll have to search for the 30 days of night series I loved the film!!

Anyone recommend me any zombie books too, I haven't read many but recently ordered the zombie survival guide, the rising and monster island from GM!

Hi LushiousLaura. The 30 Days of Night books are great, but I'm not hugely well read when it comes to vampires, so I haven't got much to compare it with. I too love I am Legend, but I find it more like a zombie book, with the 'end of the world' scenario.
I would definitely recommend the 'Autumn' books by David Moody, although you'd probably need to buy them from somewhere like Amazon, as I haven't seen them listed here. I may at some point decide to part with my copies, but not yet! Unlike most zombie books, they're well written and not set in NY or Washington DC!
Plague of the Dead by ZA Recht is also a good read, as is Twilight of the Dead by Travis Adkins. Good luck in finding them, though!

vampires, definitely. i don't really read any books that don't have vampires in. (does that make me sound strange?)

teen books are getting better and better! they used to be really patronizing and predictable, authors have realized that teens are just small adults and deserve a bit more.

I have read twilight saga twice since November 08, they are very good! ( i recommend reading the books before seeing the movie) another good one is Marked by P.C. & Kristin Cast.
also another reason i like the teen books about vampires is that adult books with vampires in tend to go down the path of alot of overwritten (bad) love scenes. they really make me cringe, and make me lose respect for the author.

Some of the horror writen for teens are very good. I loved the Darren Shan saga by Darren Shan. Very well written and much energy put into them.

I agree about some of the adult vampire books. As adults we accept that love scenes "occasionally" need to be included but some are so over the top and have so many in a book that there is barely a storyline left.

I try to always read the books before the movie, they are never as good as a book. Never watched a film that is better than the book.

Well, the problem with watching the film is that you only use two senses, seeing and hearing, when you read a book you experience it on a deeper level!

The Darren Shan books fly off the shelves in my library, but the twilight books have made me a total convert to fantasy! I think I will be re-reading them! On the last book in the series, started it this morning and I am half way through!!!

Start with Interview with the Vampire (much better than the film), then:

Vampire Lestat
Queen of the Damned
Tale of the body thief
memnoch the devil
Vampire Armand
Merrick
Blood and Gold
Blackwood farms
Blood Canticle

There is also Vittorio the Vampire ( i haven't read), i believe this is stand alone book.
I have been told that the mayfair witch books (The witching hour, lasher, taltos) should be read between vampire Armand and Merrick. And a book called Pandora should be read between blood and gold and blackwood farms. These aren't part of the vampire chronicles, but been told they enhance your experience of them.

Hope this helps and they are definitely in the right order, if I am wrong someone is welcome to correct me. (Sorry its long winded).

Try "Words of Their Roaring", its a different take on the zombie genre, I have a copy for sale on here.

You might also want to try Plague of the Dead (1&2) by ZA Recht.

World War Z is well worth a read, its written as a number of 'real' accounts of incidents and references the Zombie Survival Guide (same author).

Hi. I have to say that I didn't really enjoy 'The Words of Their Roaring'. Still, it's worth a try. As with David Wellington's monster books, I find that a twist on the genre just doesn't work. A zombie novel is what it is.

I agree about 'The Plague of The Dead' though. Great book.
Still, nothing beats the Autumn books, although as these are currently being republished you can only get hold of them at ridiculous prices. Someone was selling all 5 books on Ebay for £500!! I bought mine for a tenner each.

I would steer clear of anything by Anthony Giangregorio. His stories are like something a primary school teacher would mark in Creative Writing classes!

I think I can feel a Brian Keene book coming on next...

Ever tried werewolves? Kelley Armstrong makes them quite sexy in her Women of the Otherworld series! I enjoyed the first 2 books in her series.

I think Vampires and zombies are 2 different genres altogether. I relished every single book from Ann Rice years ago (although her series has grown since I read what I thought was the last one, The Body Thief!...)

I had never tried zombies stories before but got hooked on World War Z by Max Brooks, I read it on a flight back from NY City to good old Belfast and could hardly put it down. It read real and scary, I think there are plans to turn it into a movie... Interesting!

Thanks for the Simon Clark tip, I just ordered Blood Crazy that was getting great reviews on Amazon.

Talk later!

Isn't the whole essence of a vampire the idea of the tensions between attraction and fear, the melding of sexuality, danger and death? Or is that just me?
I don't get zombies they are just scary and look like they need a good wash.
Werewolves I could get interested in - the beast in the man, a bit of the old Jekkyl and Hyde thing going on there.
Still think Bram Stoker's Dracula takes some beating.

I think lots of books in the horror genre generally are badly written, but there are some crackers, too!

Although many people here talk about the differences between the vampire and zombie genres (if you can call them genres), it is the similarities that appeal to me and keep me reading. They are both monsters that started out as humans and lost their human consciousness/conscience through death. Of course zombies need a wash, but the gore is what makes them fun!

I haven't been tempted to read the Twilight books yet, probably for the same reason that I didn't watch Buffy on telly (teen twaddle!). I may be wrong, I'm just going on reviews. Looking forward to Pride and Prejudice and Zombies next!

Vampires? Absolute must read, then, is Kim Newman's 'Anno Dracula'..alternate-history with a twist: Dracula comes to Britain, as per the Bram Stoker novel...but survives, and goes on to become Prince Consort to Queen Victoria. A wild mixture of real historical characters AND fictional ones, cracking good story. Also a sequel, 'Bloody Red Baron' set in WW I, includes a vampire Baron von Richthofen versus a vampire Captain 'Biggles' Bigglesworth.

I just finished reading Twilight. I absolutely loved it, could not put it down. Yeah its a vampire book but its not at all scary or creepy like they usually are. It is very teenie and primarily a romance I think. The other in the series might be more vampire related. I loved it but it wasn't the vampire stuff it was the writing which although isn't challenging flows very well. It is a little Buffy like so you may not enjoy VikiB, but I would recommend it.

Hi. I know what you mean. I always imagined Lestat as being fair, though. Maybe Brad Pitt would have been good as Lestat. But Tom Cruise? No way. Louis should be dark. And Armand was supposed to be small, pale and ginger. And look like a 14 year old boy! So nothing like Antonio Banderas then! I thought Kirsten Dunst as Claudia was great though. Let's see what the next installment does. Wonder who they're casting...

I bought 'Twilight' as it was on offer in ASDA, and 'Bitten' came this morning, so I've got plenty to get my teeth in to (GROAN!)

I don't really fancy zombies because they're lacking in style!

That really intersting vikki as I've read the first two Sookie books and enjoyed them and intend to read more. But have given up on the True Blood series as it wasn't as good as I expected after reading the books. It made it all seem a bit cheesy.

I've also read bitten and quite enjoyed it but liked Twilight better.

Just shows that everybody has different tastes. Only watched the first 2 episodes though so may change my opinion when I get chance to watch the rest.

Is there any good zombie fiction? I'd like to find some.
I have to clarify what I mean here. I mean fiction about voodoo & zombies, not what I refer to as Romerombies.

Don't get me wrong. I love the original 'Night Of The Living Dead' movie. It's an all-time classic, but for some reason Romero's own variant on zombies, as flesh eating & highly infectious walking corpses seems to have completely taken over in modern fiction.

If any one knows of any good books based on the original zombie concept, please let me know. Especially any nice old ones.

Vampires. Love 'em. Hate 'em. They're everywhere.

The first few Anne Rice books were pretty good on ideas, but I wouldn't recommend bothering beyond Queen Of The Damned. She's not really that good a writer. See my post in the Anne Rice thread on the What I Am Reading forum for more.

Even Interview With The Vampire wasn't all that original, as it wasn't disimilar in concept to the first book in Fred Saberhagen's Dracula series, 'The Dracula Tape', which I actually preferred. Look up Saberhagen on wikepedia for a full list of the books in that series. Volume 2 was an excellent meeting of Dracula & Sherlock Holmes.

Many people have mentioned the Charlaine Harris books, but no one has mentioned the Blood books by Tanya Huff, which were adapted for TV as 'Blood Ties'. A very enjoyable series in both formats, but the books are better.

For a more Lovecraftian view of Vampires (& a more visceral one, which will appeal to the zombie fans here) try the Necroscope series by Brian Lumley. I recommend the original trilogy unreservedly. By the way, the Dave mentioned in the dedication in the 2nd book in the series (Necroscope II: Wamphyri) is yours truly. ;o)

DreamberryWine recommended Anno Dracula & I have to agree. If you're really into vampires in film & books, then it's even more rewarding, as Kim Newman manages to squeeze just about every fictional vampire you ever heard of in there somewhere.

By the way DreamberryWine, I have a strong feeling we know each other. I was on your mailing list for years & once drove up to Manchester with a carload of books to sell you.
