The war that was going on is fact (look it up on Wikipedia) but the story is fiction. Its a wonderful book although there is a very sudden turning point.

I've just started this book and so far, so good - I came to it with no expectations at all as all I knew was it had something to do with Great Expectations...

Fantastic book. I was re-reading it recently and knew that something pivotal and unpleasant happened but couldn't remember what or when. I was waiting to give blood when I reached that bit and was comlpetely gripped and horrfied again. I almost had to peep through my fingers to read in the way that you hide when watching something gruesome on the television or at the cinema. My daughter read the book after me and I could tell when she reached that part as the gasped. I loved the unfolding of the story.

I found this hard going.....intriguing but hard going....maybe I loved 'GE' too much, same thing happened when I tried to read heathcliff' as I adore 'Wuthering heights.'
That said I lovged 'Wide Sargasso Sea'- related to Jane Eyre....Rochester's mad wife Bertha Mason...my GCSE englaish teacher, seeing how much I loved JE told me I needed to read it and she was right.

This book was heading to my all time top ten before 'that bit'. I know its my fault for not being tough enough but I just couldn't get past the brutality. my book club read it about 4 months after I had and in flipping through it to talk about it I just wanted to start afresh it was so compelling. Still am not ready though!

I've just finished it. I've never read a book that made me gasp with shock! Caught me out - wasn't expecting that. Couldn't read it again though, the characters were incredibly real which made what happened to them just too painful to witness twice. Powerful writing.

I completely agree. Interesting choice of words - 'witness' - you must be a very visual reader, like me, are you - I picture everything and everyone in my mind's eye as I read..
