A lot of reviews rave about it's "poetic" language, and it is beautiful, carefully crafted prose but I couldn't engage with the protagonist, and to me that's an important part of the enjoyment of a novel.

Of course, it was almost certainly intentional, as he is not intended to be a reliable narrator, but there are some unreliable narrators - step forward Moll Flanders as an example - who you can get to know, love and root for!

I didn't like it either. Did not really care what happened so did not engage.

A friend raved about this to me - would'nt say I didn't like it - but was disappointed.
