The American Civil War, a war as dehumanizing as any other, is brought to life as a period in history that called up extremes of bravery and brutality. Told in two voices, it is set against the backdrop of vast, untamed America and its wildlife, both animal and human. Ada and Inman are ordinary citizens of the American South, separated by the Civil War and slowly becoming strangers to one another. When Inman deserts the military field hospital, he begins his long journey back home to Cold Mountain under 'a black flag', fighting only for himself, and to see Ada once more. Her own tragedy, the death of her beloved missionary father and her newly discovered poverty on her remote farm, is unknown to him. The heart of Cold Mountain lies in their arduous journey both for survival and to find each other, the new selves they have become. Critics compared the book to Homer's Odyssey and it certainly has an epic scope, and echoes that poem's preoccupations with war, journeys, and a besieged home whose domesticity is a dream for the travelling man, and something hard-won, or non-existent, for the woman who is there. What the papers say:
'A beautiful book written in exquisite prose' -- Kate Atkinson 'A remarkable first novel, a romance of love, of friendship, of family, of land. Frazier has inhaled the spirit of the age and breathes it into the reader's being' -- The Times 'Magnificent...this wonderful novel presents the terrible, discordant reality of life in a war. Profoundly moving, it raises all the big questions' -- Observer
Charles Frazier lives in North Carolina, where this novel is set, and where he and his wife have been developing a horse farm for the last five years. He has taught in universities, written travel books and had one short story published. COLD MOUNTAIN, his first novel, is based on stories of his ancestors' experiences during the Civil War, handed down through the generations.
